Family Support

Addiction is a family problem and the needs of family members are often forgotten

Living with addiction is not easy. It brings confusion and distress. For anyone involved with someone suffering the effects, there are shared, similar experiences. The battles with powerlessness, preoccupation, isolation and low self-esteem become part of the fabric of “family life”. Family and friends know, only too well, the fruitless struggle to control the uncontrollable and the difficulties of recognising and sharing the emotions that accompany the fight with this illness. Addiction wreaks havoc leaving a trail of chaos and debris in its wake.

Family Support and a Family Programme aim to create a safe environment within which participants can identify and explore experiences, emotions and behaviours that may have been affected and influenced through someone else’s addiction. Individually, and through group discussions, participants are encouraged to gain insight, self-awareness and information to help in the process of understanding addiction and its impact. Through identifying the effect of addiction on the family and identification of family roles, the way forward to change will become clearer.

It has been shown in much research that a person accessing treatment for their addiction has improved chances of success in the long term where families and/or loved ones have engaged with some form of support and have developed their own understanding of the issues surrounding addiction and drug/alcohol misuse.

The majority of the treatment centres that we work with offer family therapy as part of the treatment being offered to the individual and often the cost is included within the overall costs for treatment.
